Global warming is caused mainly by the increased concentration of greenhouse gases, among which CO2 emissions are very important. The Kyoto protocol has urged all stakeholders, from road authorities and owners to road contractors and material producers, to reduce emission rates to 1990 levels. The transport sector accounts for about 25% of all GHG emissions, and the greater part of this contribution is generated by road transport.
