New Zealand's road safety strategy to2020, Safer Journeys [Ministry of Transport 2010], has as one of its goals a reduction in the fatality rate of young people. In 2007/08, the fatality rate for young New Zealanders in road crashes was 21 per 100,000 population. Half of these fatalities were drivers. By comparison, the equivalent rate in Australia was 13 per 100,000 population.
