South Africa’s Progress and Ongoing Commitment to Reducing its Carbon Footprint in the Asphalt Industry

Globally, the roads industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and the global imperative to combat climate change has highlighted the critical need for such industries to mitigate their carbon emissions. In South Africa, more than 90% of South Africa’s roads originate from the broader asphalt industry (bituminous and asphalt surface treatments and asphalt derived bases) and it can play a significant role in assisting to reduce the road related emissions. South Africa’s asphalt industry has for many years been working towards the development of cleaner technologies such as Warm Mix Asphalt, the reuse of recycled and waste materials and the reduction of its production emissions.
