The construction of new roads or the widening thereof often has significant environmental impacts. To reduce these impacts, the approach used in environmental assessments is first to avoid them, then to minimise them through mitigation measures, and finally to compensate for any residual losses. In a context of climate crisis and biodiversity loss, the wooded natural habitat component is becoming increasingly important in environmental assessments.
