As of the end of 2018, the total length of the Japanese motorway network had reached approx. 9,500 km, with most road segments being operated and maintained by Nippon Expressway Companies (NEXCOs), which are divided into the country’s Eastern, Central and Western regions. This network comprises some 1,200 km of bridge sections (accounting for roughly 15% of the total length) and about 900 km of tunnel sections (approx. 11%); in all, these infrastructure projects number about 16,000 bridges and 1,800 (tube) tunnels.
