The Phenomenon of Smart Roads and Autonomous Driving: the Framework of Responsibilities

For more than a year, the Vislab company’s automated vehicles have been circulating on the roads of Parma and Turin. The tests, authorized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, proceed in perfect order, without causing accidents or incidents. These tests open up an extraordinary horizon primarily for safety. It has in fact been demonstrated (EU data) that 94% of road accidents depend on driver-related factors: driving distracted or altered by substances, speeding, failure to comply with road signs. All of these factors could be neutralised by automated vehicle driving, thus turning the much hoped-for “zero fatality future“ into reality.
