The Republic of Niger is a West African country (illustration 1) with a vast land mass (1.3 million km²), 80% of which lies in an extremely arid zone (Sahara and Sahel). While the population (17 million) remains primarily concentrated in the country's "more fertile" southern reaches, its extractive resources (gold, iron, coal, uranium, oil, etc.) tend to be in the north.
