The PIARC Technical Committee for Road Safety recognizes that 90% of traffic deaths occur in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) and uses this information to assess, identify and share best practices of road safety activities for LMICs by developing documents and case studies highlighting international practices and lessons learned. In addition, the Technical Committee is focused on making proven countermeasures that effectively reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes, available to LMICs for consideration in safety-related project developments. The PIARC Global Road Safety Knowledge Exchange Project aimed to promote knowledge sharing by implementing aids that built upon previous work of PIARC Technical Committee for Road Safety, focusing particularly on LMICs, where road traffic injury death rates are significantly higher than in high-income countries. In collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), the project employed a literature review process encompassing over 50 PIARC technical reports, seminar proceedings, and case studies covering eight major road safety areas. These areas included Management Strategy/Policies, Infrastructure, Road Tunnels, Vulnerable Road Users, Human Factors/Behaviour, Vehicle, Speed, and Data, with special attention given to the Road Safety Manual and the Road Tunnels Manual. This article presents the summary of PIARC’s published work on the areas of Infrastructure for Road Safety and of Road Tunnels, as it was developed and presented during the PIARC Road Safety Knowledge Exchange project.
