Following the publication of PIARC's report "Improving Safety in Road Tunnels through Real-time Communication with Users" which identifies loudspeaker Public Address (PA) systems as one of the real-time communication provisions for facilitating road tunnel operations, a survey with PIARC Technical Committee D.5 members was conducted in 2016 to better understand the current practices and extent of deployment of loudspeaker PA systems in road tunnels. The PA system in question refers to loudspeakers installed along road tunnel carriageways and not sound alert devices such as sirens and sound beacons installed at specific locations in road tunnels such as emergency exits. This article discusses the responses received from the survey.
