This article gives a brief overview of the activities conducted by World Road Association's Technical Committee D.5 Road Tunnel Operations and introduces the 8 articles prepared for this special issue of Routes/Roads magazine. It also presents the first World Road Association international conference on road tunnel operations and safety organized in Lyon, France, on the 3rd to 5th October 2018, with the support of TC D.5 and the French National Committee of the World Road Association.
