Two technological advances will fundamentally alter safety design considerations and operations of road tunnels. The first, alternative fuels, is already having an impact, while the second, autonomous vehicles, is still not fully understood. The primary intent of this article is to explore impacts to road tunnel safety design, including operational considerations, of alternative fuel vehicles usage. These advances are already occurring and can be expected to increase in the future.
